Building a Retirement Home in Kenya From The USA
Building a retirement home in Kenya while living in the USA come with much enthusiasm and ambition after the long years of intensive hard work and disconnecting from your motherland. The bigger question is whether the house you are building today will still work for you 10, 15 or 20 years from now.
We have insisted enough about starting right which includes assembling the right professional team before construction starts, building trust and setting up reliable monitoring systems. A proper system should define who does what, how decisions are approved, how payments are released and how progress is verified.
Today the focus is the home itself. At 40 or 50, you may design a large villa with several bedrooms, a large spaces, dramatic interiors etc because that is what your family needs at the time. But retirement changes the way you use a house.
The children may have moved out and started their own families. You may no longer need five bedrooms. Your knees may not appreciate climbing stairs every day. Bending down to reach low cabinets may become uncomfortable, while very high kitchen cabinets may become difficult to use.
A retirement home should therefore be designed around how you expect to live over the years. Consider a predominantly single-level layout where practical. Keep bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and the main living spaces easily accessible. Avoid unnecessary level changes. Provide good natural lighting and ventilation. Make doorways and circulation comfortable, and think about where handrails, seating and support may eventually be needed. Good design can incorporate these considerations discreetly.
The same thinking applies if instead building for ageing parents or grandparents. Design for their current needs while allowing for changes in mobility later.
A quiet rural setting may look perfect when viewed during a holiday, but retirement involves everyday life. How far is the nearest hospital? Can you easily access a supermarket, church, social activities or other services? Is the road accessible throughout the year? What happens if you can no longer drive? If a location is not fixed, it important to get one that aligns with these parameters.
Security, water reliability, electricity, internet connectivity and maintenance should also be considered. You may have the money to construct an impressive home, but will you want to maintain it after retirement?
A practical retirement home should be economical to operate. Good orientation, natural ventilation, durable finishes, rainwater management, solar power where appropriate and efficient plumbing can reduce dependence on expensive systems later.
It is also worth considering whether parts of the property can generate income. A separate guest unit, cottage or small rental space can provide flexibility without compromising your privacy. This also helps with extra company especially for the autophobic.
In conclusion, the objective should not simply be to complete a house but create a home that remains practical, affordable and comfortable when the reason for building it finally arrives. In other words, build for the life you are moving towards, not simply the life you are leaving behind.
A proper system should define who does what, how decisions are approved, how payments are released and how progress is verified.
