Groundbreaking of a Luxury Off-grid Residential Home
On Friday, 28 August 2026, Rickfes Construction Ltd was commissioned as the Project Manager and Lead Consultant for the development of Hedos Homestead, an expansive six-acre private development in Makueni County, in Kenya’s Lower Eastern region.
The project is being developed with a strong focus on sustainability, alternative building technologies and integration with the surrounding environment. Rickfes will oversee the overall project management and lead consultancy role, while also providing technical consultation, construction and supervision for the rammed earth and interlocking soil stabilized block works.
Hedos Homestead is envisioned as a private, luxurious and off-grid family development comprising a five-bedroom main house together with supporting structures, including a secondary house, office and guard house.
One of the most significant advantages identified at the site is the suitability of the local soils for rammed earth construction. Rather than relying entirely on conventional construction materials transported from elsewhere, the project will investigate and utilise the site’s natural resources as part of the building process, subject to the required technical assessment and construction requirements.
As the project begins, we considered it important to introduce the development to the surrounding community and create an opportunity for local residents to understand what is planned.
The project team therefore took time to break bread with members of the local community, introduce the project and explain its objectives, as well as provide an indication of what they can expect as the development progresses over the coming year and a half.
For projects located within rural communities, this type of engagement can be an important part of establishing a positive relationship between the development, the project team and the people living around it.
The engagement culminated in a short ground-breaking ceremony, during which the first stone was laid to formally mark the beginning of the development.
